In North Dakota, the early teams often consisted of state champions, and in 1914, the state champion in boys "basketball was determined. In the 1920s, Pierre High School and Pierre Middle School, as well as the Pierre Legion Baseball Board, began organizing a state tournament. The North finished the season with a 12-2 record and helped Pierre to his first ever championship game hosted by the University of Chicago. He also led all high school scorers in both boys' and girls' basketball in the 1924-25 season.
