The state of South Dakota needs law enforcement officers and appears to be finding them in other states, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Public Safety. The city's police department has more than 1,000 state-audited agencies, said Johnulken Burns, director of the Sioux Falls Police Department. Applicants for Sioux Falls positions have expressed a desire to work in a community that supports them and wants them "to be able to do their job safely," Burns said. Sen. John Stulkens, R-Fargo, a former police officer, said he was interested in candidates from other states.
In 2019, a total of 108 applications were received from the country, Stulken said, but highway police historically did not capture the numbers and always recruited from both state and state applicants, Mangan said. In addition to the increased interest in South Dakota from other states and other law enforcement agencies in the US and around the world, he noted that candidates from neighboring states, including Minnesota and Iowa, were among the candidates. State and local authorities face a challenge recruiting and retaining law enforcement officers because of increased interest in applications from citizens, according to the Department of Public Safety.
