Pierre, South Dakota has been explored by the 1743 Chevalier and Louis La Verendrye brothers.  Plus, Lewis & Clark made their expedition here between 1804 and 1806.

During this time, Lewis & Clark were part of President Jefferson’s Corps of Discovery.

Lewis & Clark encountered the Teton Lakota Tribes at the mouth of the Teton River.  Black Buffalo was the Teton’s chief during this skirmish. During the 1700s Pierre, South Dakota was a fur trading town. The 1800s marked its history of steamboat activity. By 1855, Fort Pierre became part of a major transportation route.

Pierre, South Dakota’s American bison herds were preserved by James Scotty Philip. 

Also, Reverend Stewart Sheldon perused the town in 1880. Dances with Wolves was also filmed in Pierre, South Dakota.
